• Our Company

Boreal Tree Care is a tree care company located in Anchorage, AK. Owners Andy Milauskas and Bill Byl started the business with the goal of providing a new option for safe, professional, and high-quality arboricultural services to the residents of southcentral Alaska. Both have nearly 20 years of experience in the industry and have a passion for a life working (and playing) outside and working with, and in, the trees of Alaska. The “10,000 hours to mastery” maxim applies to us. We strive to give our clients the best possible service based on the latest industry best management practices and work recommendations. We are fully licensed, bonded, and insured, and both Bill and Andy are International Society of Arboriculture, ISA, certified arborists and TRAQ tree risk assessors.

  • The Environment

Trees are an important part of our landscape for their environmental benefits as well as psychological ones. They are part of what makes living in Alaska special. At Boreal Tree Care, we feel truly fortunate to get to spend our days working outside in the natural world we love. We have made the following choices to keep the world we share as clean and beautiful a place as possible. We have made the decision not to spray pesticides; we feel that the risks outweigh the benefits. Instead, we will only use insecticide injections, a much more localized and controlled method of application with virtually no pesticide drift to worry about. We have committed to using biodegradable bar oil that is derived from vegetable oil, instead of a petroleum-based product. We are currently exploring the use of battery-powered chainsaws in our daily production.

Nearly as long as I have memories, I have been climbing trees. Monkey-like tendencies are in my genes. At age six, the pine in my neighbor’s yard was accessible and provided an elevated perspective on the world. First, it was a few branches up, eventually to the top.

One of my mother’s hobbies was turning our yard into a small arboretum. Having purchased and planted, say, a bald cypress or a tulip poplar or maybe a pine bark maple, often she would come to realize her newest addition wasn't getting the sun it needed due to the thick stands of box elder that inhabited the property. So, with a carpenters box saw I would ascend these scrub maples and remove limbs, leaving stubs to stand on, until I was high enough to take the top and not damage the recently planted ornamental. I drug the brush to the backyard where it got stacked, eight, ten, twelve feet high and in the cool, damp days of autumn, my reward was a raging pyre. Little did my mom know that these modest beginnings would be the foundation of my future career.

Early this century, I came to work for another tree service in Anchorage that was relatively new. In the decade and a half that I worked there, the company grew, and I grew. My responsibilities covered all aspects of tree work (except for logging) as well as many aspects of running a business.

While this arrangement worked well, I eventually felt that I wanted to run my own business, making a focus on customer care and high-quality work the highest priorities. And so the desire to start Boreal Tree Care was born.

Bill Byl lives in Airport Heights with his wife Emily and dog Leo. He moved up to Alaska in 2016 from Michigan, where he spent 17 years working as an arborist, tree climber, equipment operator, IPM technician and general manager for a mid-sized tree company. When he isn’t working on the house, he spends his free time soaking up as much of the wild spaces as he can; back packing, Nordic skiing, split boarding, hunting, fishing and biking.
